Make A Guitar Truss Rod from scratch

ALL ABOUT NEAL SCHON’S GUITARS AND AMPS: (From Guitar Player Magazine, November 2008) During the more orchestral segments of the Journey set, you’ll find Neal Schon playing his 18.5″-scale Veillette Gryphon High 12 acoustic-electric. (“That guitar is tuned really high and has lots of unison strings, so it rings beautifully,” says Schon’s tech, Adam Day). And when it’s time to play “Lights” or other Strat-powered Journey classics, a Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster finds its way into Schon’s hands. But for the bulk of a Journey concert, Schon’s main guitar is a cherry sunburst flametop Gibson Neal Schon Signature Custom Les Paul. And if you think the Floyd Rose locking bridge and nut are the only custom features, look a little closer. The only truly standard features on a Neal Schon Paul are the tuning machines and the Gibson BurstBucker Pro bridge humbucker. The neck heel has been heavily sculpted—almost erased—to grant easy access to the high frets, and the fretboard is angled more parallel with the body than those on standard Les Pauls so that Floyd bridge sits flush. The neck pickup cavity is occupied by a single-coil-sized DiMarzio Fast Track 2 humbucker and a Fernandes Sustainer Driver. The knobs are widely spaced and have been rewired to include a master volume, a push/pull master tone (the pull position activates a Vari-Tone-type circuit that gives Schon wah sounds without a wah pedal), and a master Sustainer volume. 2. ht448 Says:

@evilguitar9430 OK! Get a Truss rod you happy with… now get an iron… Set it to FULL Steam and leave it on the High end of the fretboard furthest from the headstock, leave it for ten minutes then get a thin razor blade and hammer it into the end of the board where it meats the neck then fish a scraper or somthing in the crack and hammer own slowly when it becomes hard iron some more ect then get something to pry the old Truss rod out slop the new one in with Cilcone glue board back on happy?

Thanks for posting this. I have a question though… I built one like you made here, but it broke under pressure. The rod twisted off at the point of turning. Is my rod too week? What kind of steel are you using???

  4. guitwild Says:

@anrmenchaca47 Yes sir but make it longer

  5. anrmenchaca47 Says:

@guitwild Can I follow these same guidelines in terms of making a trussrod for a homemade extended range bass…say about an 8 string? please advise.

I’m trying my hand at building a guitar, and I’m just now at the state where I am learning about truss rods and how they work. What factors will tell me how long a rod I need for the neck I make? In other words, does it run beyond the fingerboard length, or should it stop near the end of it? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to going shorter or longer with the rod?

  7. evilguitar9430 Says:

hey im trying to replaced a truss rod to a jackson neck
it doesent work the original trus rod
how in the world can i do that
because jackson necks are to EXPENSIVE!

  8. guitwild Says:

@Yeseniaschick The answer is yes for all three questions, The truss rod is no different

  9. Yeseniaschick Says:

Have you ever build a double neck guitar or a 12 string guitar? Do 12 string guitars use the same truss rods that a 6 string guitar does? Or do they use a specific type of truss rod since there is more tension since there are 6 extra strings? Have bought 3 books on guitar building but none of them mention anything about 12 string guitars. Can you please help?

  10. m4ngo3 Says:

Does this work for acoustic guitars?
I’m going to try it, thanks.

  11. Bertziethegreat Says:

While I really don’t intend on building my own trussrod, I found this video informative as to what goes into them. Thanks. :)

  12. rocketking1000 Says:

thanks a lot! my truss rod budget just went from 20$ to 3$!

  13. ksm375 Says:

    @3yE
A rod won’t be strong enough, you’d be better off putting another piece of wood in with an opposing grain. The idea isn’t to prevent the neck from breaking, it’s to prevent it from bending to allow for future adjustments. Next time you’re at a home store, check out the threaded rod, it’s awfully easy to bend.

I’ve made 2 guitars for the kids and I’ve put in straight bar rather than a truss rod. If you bend a bar against it’s wide side, you’ll find it very rigid. No adjust though.

  19. prodigyofsin333 Says:

    I agree

  20. guitwild Says:

Try it you may be right. When you are young player every one wants XL Strings but as your playing matures and your age, strength, etc. You will end up changing the gauges of your strings there fore the neck will need adjustment, Guaranteed. I think Gibson, Fender Martian no what they are doing, I’ll stick with an adjustable truss rod. But your idea could work

  21. 3yE Says:

Say, why all this effort? Why not simply epoxy a long, solid steel rod or profile into the neck? I bet it would keep its original shape for eons to come, string tension or not.

  22. KreatorOfDeath1985 Says:

so will this work on an Electric bass 35″ scale if i get a 23 1/2″ rod?

What determines the direction it bends the neck (back or forward)?

  23. guitwild Says:

Yes this design is a Martin Style

  24. julianexperience23 Says:

do these trust rods work on acoustic guitars

  25. DimitriDas1 Says:

@rabbs33 It really sickened me to read about that story with the whole wife thing. It aint fuckin 82 any more I mean at some point you have to give it up. Just not cool. Was always a huge fan of his but after that idk. And they way they whole band went about it making fun of the other guy. Perry was Journey and Neil was always a prick.

Lean nuestro reporte en español sobre la tragicomedia de los ‘colados’ de la Casa Blanca, ahora con música de Journey (y muchos ‘punteos’ de Schon…)

  30. dbarber1013 Says:

God I love that sustainer (Fernandez?) I see the switches on the bottom of the guitar. What a sweet tone, I’ve got to figure out how to replicate a little of that sound on my 5W fender tube with my Epi Prophecy! Neal can make that thing sing…. I hope they swing by Boise again this year!!!!

  31. jimdep1 Says:

@dadduorp All right, GOOD !! I’m glad it’s not just me!

I remember seeing Neal for the first time 12-31-73 ( Journey’s debut) at Winterland. I’m thinking it was In my Lonely Feeling, Of a Lifetime and / or Topaz. He completely blew me away with his tone, phrasing and speed. Kohotek was another one. I was 16 at the time and I became a Neal Schon fan on impact. Journey albums through the Next album still get much play on my van CD player. I just don’t hear the tone or phrasing anymore.

  32. dadduorp Says:

…also liked the unique way of using a Wah pedal by holding it in a set [tone] position instead of most players who just step on it to the beat of the music (think Terry Kath in Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4″)

  33. dadduorp Says:

    @jimdep1
That’s hilarious, because I’m always saying that his guitar (post-LP) “sounds like it has a cold.” But back to Schon…
He’s a MONSTER player. And I agree with many of the comments that his ear/style goes far beyond just playing the instrument. As a young gun, he’s admitted to copying the phrasing of vocalists like Aretha Franklin, etc., and it shows with coming up w some of the tastiest licks in rock music.

  34. jimdep1 Says:

@dadduorp This is SO true. I just got through saying the same thing on a video where he is advertising his new Black heart rig, or Black star……whatever it is……

I say the same thing about Carlos. He never sounded better than he did from 1974 and before, playing his Les Paul through his Twins and then through his first Mesa Boogie. Now, using his PRS, his guitar sounds like it has a sinus infection.

  35. dadduorp Says:

You know, for all the fancy gadgetry and banks of guitars, his best playing and sound was when he just had a stock Les Paul and a Fender Twin ca. 1970-74.

  36. PDXguitarfreak Says:

Neal Schon is one of the most underrated guitar players in rock history. Loved this video… thanks for sharing. :)

What’s the name of the song Neal is playing? I just need to know.
I would really appreciate an anwser, if somebody knows :D

  39. Dreamdancer11 Says:

@t3hPoundcake Seriously dude..why would you need a Les Paul or a super expensive boutique amp?Nowadays you can produce sounds from your own pc that you needed a studio back in his time to produce.Tone is in the hands mate…just a decent guitar with good pickups units like gsp1011 that produce great sounds from the get go and you are set.Even without an amp straight to the pa you ll sound great(providing that you can actually play).

  40. rronald1 Says:

cool…but no one needs that much crap! Give the man a chorus, wah, and overdrive w/compressor! Done!!! Great guitarist…nice lics and riffs and lyrics
    though!
